What is Teddy Thinking?

At the Southland Embroiderers' Guild each year there is a challenge. The title this year was "Through a Window". This was my project, inspired by all of the teddies in windows during lockdown and the rejuvenation of our city centre. Here teddy is looking out to the Southland Times Building and further down Esk Street. The Times Building facade will be kept in the rejuvenation. Maybe he is wondering where all the people are.... It was stitched in stranded cottons. The buildings were printed on silk and highlighted. Teddy and the window were drawn separately on calico. Teddy was stitched with Turkey stitch and then trimmed to make his fur.. This part was cut out and stitched over the background picture with plastic used for the window

36 Morris Car & Stewart Island Embroidery

With a lot of the fittings back on the car, it is looking really good now. In fact it is a source of interest, not only for the guys, but also it is greatly admired by some of the Gore Spinning Group ladies - well I think it is the car they are admiring, and I thought they were coming to the studio...! Bill's Great Grandfather built several boats on Stewart Island, and I am taking this as a theme This is the basis for the Island made from hand dyed Silks I have stitched the bush on the Island and have 3 oysters and a Blue Cod in the sea. Learn A Stitch Project

Last year at the Southland Embroidery Guild we had a Learn a Stitch project. I have made my embroidery into a cushion. I have also used the complementary colours of Green and Red as a colour study. It was a great way to try different stitches and become familiar with them. This was something I wanted to do - embroider wood grain I began with 3 circles and then couched heavier threads around one side of them. From there it was a matter of making lies of stitching to resemble woodgrain. I have used different stitches as before, and as i am not a fan of just brown, I have used other colours to give it interest - of course there had to be purple in too! Another way to learn stitches is to do some crazy patchwork. this is interesting because you can combine stitches.
